NATIVE PLANTS FOR PROFESSIONALS

Wednesday January 14, 2026

9:30 AM - 10:30 AM

Are you a green industry professional looking to integrate native plants into your design palette? David Falk will introduce you to a variety of ecological planting concepts and to some native Northeast plants. Topics will include how to define “native,” basics about native plants’ benefits, selection of the right plants for the right place and purpose, resources and references for plant selection, and nitty-gritty topics such as lawn replacement and plants for typically difficult spots. David will share examples of successful native plantings and appealing species. You will take away a cache of new resources, references, and plant ideas to enhance your design arsenal.

David grew up in Brooklyn, went to college at Skidmore and then graduate school at the New School in NY for philosophy, but switched to study ecology. He started with the Audubon Society in Vermont and then moved to Boston for an internship at Arnold Arboretum. He had his own gardening business for a few years and now works at the Native Plant Trust (formerly New England Wildflower Society) as a horticulturist. He works on ecological stewardship and sustainability in garden practices in both urban and suburban environments. In Somerville, he designed and installed both the Morse Kelley pollinator habitat garden and native meadow and plantings at the Growing Center.
